When Duty Called: The Story of Michael Tufarella

Dear John,

Although I did not know Tufarella personally, I knew how deeply he mattered to our community. I went to school with his sister, and in Hauppauge we all understood what it meant to be an Eagle. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle. Soaring high above us all, carrying the pride of where we came from and the strength of who we became.

After graduating from HHS, Michael Tufarella went on to serve with the Hauppauge Fire Department. On the day the world stopped turning, he made the same decision so many brave souls made & he responded as mutual aid to Ground Zero. He stepped into the ruins of the World Trade Center during the recovery efforts, doing the work that would forever define courage. He kept going for a couple of years, until February of 2003, when he fell ill. His family never left his side. They carried him through every moment, every breath, every fear.

Tufarella was diagnosed with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, a devastating condition where fluid fills the lungs and robs the body of oxygen. It is a cruel illness, one that strikes those who have already endured too much. And on June 15th, 2003, you took your last breath. A loss directly tied to the work he did at Ground Zero. His death was not just a passing. It was a sacrifice. It was the cost of heroism. It was the price paid by someone who answered the call when the world was burning.

I am honored to carry you with me.

That is all!

Carry on!
